Verb and Kinds of Verb

What is a verb?

Verb is the word that describes the action or state of being of the subject.

Example:  They began the boat race this morning.

Kinds of Verb

1.      Action Verbs – describe the behavior or action of someone or something.  Action verbs may describe physical actions or mental activities.

Physical Action :   The airplane landed on the ground.

Mental Activities : Sammy wants a new jacket.  

2.      Linking Verbs – joins the subject to it’s complement which is a predicate noun or adjective.

Commonly used linking verbs: 

appear, look, stay,

be, remain, taste,

become, seem,

feel, smell,

grow, sound

3.      Helping Verbs – helps the main verb of the sentence.  It may be formed from have, can, may be, shall, will, might, must, do and appears before the main verb in a verb phrase.

I am finishing my work.

Common helping verbs :

am, can, had,

are, could, may,

be, has, must,

is, have, might,

was, shall, did,

were, should, do,

been, will, does
