String Section

            The instruments are similar in appearance but different in sizes.  The larger the instrument, the longer the strings, are deeper the sound. 

 

violin Violin is the soprano of the string section.  Highly valued for its lyric quality, it can also produce brilliant and dramatic tones.  It has a wide range of dynamics.

 

 

 

viola Viola, the alto of the string section, is shaped the same as the violin but is somewhat larger.  Its tone is less brilliant than that of the violin and of darker quality.

 

 

 

cello Violoncello or cello serves as the tenor of the string section.  It has a warm, rich sound.  Its shape is like a violin but much larger, it rests on the floor.

 

 

 

doublebass Double bass is also known as the string bass or contrabass.  It serves as the bass of the string section.  It is almost six feet in length.  To play it, the performer has to sit on a tall stool or stand.  It produces a low, dark sound most useful in producing a harmonic foundation for the orchestra.
