Rocks : Kinds of Sedimentary Rock

Sedimentary rock is the type of rock that is formed by sedimentation of material at the Earth’s surface and within bodies of water.  Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause mineral and/or organic particles to settle and accumulate or minerals to precipitate from a solution. Particles that form a sedimentary rock by accumulating are called sediment. Before being deposited, sediment was formed by weathering and erosion in a source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, mass movement or glaciers.

Iron Ore is a chemical sedimentary rock that forms when iron and oxygen combine in solution and deposit as a sediment.

Limestone is used for roadbed, it is composed of calcium carbonate which may have been chemically precipitated in the sea, or else deposited by living organisms in the sea; often contains fossils of sea life.

Rock Salt forms from the evaporation of ocean or saline lake waters. It is also known by the mineral name "halite".  It is rarely found at Earth’s surface, except in areas of very arid climate. It is often mined for use in the chemical industry or for use as a winter highway treatment.  Some halite is processed for use as a seasoning for food

Sandstone is common building stone, basically sand grains cemented together, which may have been deposited as sand dunes, sand bars, or washed into the sea.

Shale is composed mostly of tiny clay particles of the kind found in mud, much smaller than sand particles, so shale is smoother than sandstone.

Siltstone forms from silt weathering debris.

Conglomerate is a rock consisting of individual clasts within a finer-grained matrix that have become cemented together.  They are sedimentary rocks consisting of rounded fragments and are thus differentiated from breccias, which consist of angular clasts.

Coal is a sedimentary rock composed predominantly of solid organic materials with a greater or lesser proportion of mineral matter.  It is derived from the accumulation of plant remains in sedimentary basins, and is altered to solid rock by heat and pressure applied during the basin’s development. Its quality varies according to the content of ash, impurities, and volatile matter which decreases as coal rank gets higher. It has a natural dark brown to black, graphitelike appearance and is primarily used as a fuel.

Chert is a microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline sedimentary rock material composed of silicon dioxide.  It occurs as nodules, concretionary masses and as layered deposits.  Chert breaks with a conchoidal fracture, often producing very sharp edges.

Breccia is a rock composed of angular fragments of minerals or rocks in a matrix that may be similar or different in composition to the fragments.
