Weather: All About Weather

Weather keeps changing.  It affects both living and non-living things.

Kinds of Weather

1.      Rainy

2.      Sunny

3.      Windy

4.      Cloudy

5.      Stormy

6.      Hot

7.      Cold

Factors that affect the Weather

1.      Amount of Sunlight – the region that receives much sunlight experiences a warmer weather than a region that receives little sunlight.

2.      Air Pressure – Air has weight and therefore it exerts pressure.  Cold air is heavier than warm air.  Areas which have heavy, cold air are high pressure areas.  Parts of the land with warm air are low pressure areas.

3.      Movement of Air – Warm air rises and cold air moves to take the place of the warm air.  Air also moves from high pressure areas to low pressure areas.  This movement of air produces wind and brings changes in weather.  A breeze is a gentle wind.

4.      Clouds – Clouds are made up of water vapor that gathers and floats in the sky.  They help some people in the prediction of weather.

Types of Clouds

  1. Nimbus clouds are thick, low-lying, dark clouds.  Because rain falls from dark nimbus clouds, they are also called rain clouds.
  2. Cumulus clouds predict fair weather.  They are closely packed and they look like cotton balls.  Their shape constantly changes.  Cumulus means pile or heap.

  3. Stratus clouds look like white sheets, and so are called stratus which means sheets.  These clouds float closest to the ground.  Like the cumulus, stratus clouds are fair weather clouds.

  4. Cirrus clouds, unlike other clouds are made up of ice droplets.  The word cirrus means “curl of hair”, and cirrus clouds look like curls.  These clouds are the highest clouds.
